The hikers planned to cross the area around Kholat Syakhl, a remote mountain region that later became known as Dyatlov Pass. When the group failed to return as scheduled, search teams were organised. On 26 February 1959, rescuers found the expedition’s tent on a snowy slope. The bodies were discovered in stages. The first five victims were found downslope from the tent, while four others were later discovered in a ravine area beneath snow. Over the decades, proposed explanations included:
- a military weapons test or rocket accident;
- an encounter with unknown people or local hostility;
- unusual weather effects;
- an animal attack or legendary creature;
- panic caused by environmental conditions.
The more extraordinary versions gained attention because they matched the atmosphere of the story: a remote mountain, unexplained deaths and incomplete records. However, the existence of a strange story is not the same as evidence for a strange cause. The delayed slab avalanche theory
The modern avalanche explanation differs from the simple idea of a large wall of snow sweeping away a campsite. Researchers Johan Gaume and Alexander Puzrin proposed that a smaller slab avalanche could have developed after the hikers cut into the slope to build their camp. According to this model, the sequence may have been:
- The hikers dug into the slope while positioning their tent.
- Snow accumulated above the altered area under strong winds.
- A slab of compacted snow later shifted and struck the tent.
- The group escaped quickly, fearing a larger collapse.
- Unable to return safely, they suffered fatal exposure in the freezing conditions. WIRED
This explanation addressed several objections that had kept avalanche theories controversial. Critics had pointed out that the slope appeared too gentle, that searchers did not find obvious avalanche debris, and that some injuries seemed unusual. One of the most persistent alternatives suggests involvement from Soviet military testing. Supporters point to reports of strange lights in the region, the secrecy of Soviet-era institutions and the possibility that weapons tests were conducted in remote areas. These ideas became especially popular because the Soviet Union did conduct secret military programmes, making such speculation feel historically plausible.
However, evidence directly linking a military event to the deaths remains limited. Reports of lights or distant explosions are difficult to connect to the hikers’ final hours, and no confirmed document has demonstrated that a weapon test caused the tragedy. Why the injuries caused confusion
The injuries of the final four victims became one of the strongest arguments against ordinary explanations. Some had severe chest or skull damage described in terms similar to high-force impacts, yet there were few visible external injuries.
