Introduction
Uruguay’s rural mystery lights sit at the meeting point of old folklore and modern investigation. Long before anyone spoke about UFOs, people in the countryside told stories of eerie lights drifting over lonely fields, abandoned homesteads and burial places. In the twenty-first century, similar reports have reappeared through mobile-phone videos, social media and official aviation investigations. The result is not a simple tale of the supernatural replacing science, or vice versa. Instead, Uruguay offers an unusually clear example of how ancient beliefs, modern technology and careful official inquiry can all converge around the same basic question: what was that light?
The country’s best-known modern episode occurred in the department of Paysandú in 2023, while the older tradition survives in the legend of the “evil light”, known throughout the River Plate region. Together they show why mysterious lights continue to occupy a distinctive place in Uruguay’s strange history.
The “evil light” of River Plate folklore
The oldest strand of Uruguay’s mystery-light tradition is the rural legend commonly known as the “evil light”. Stories describe luminous blue, green or white glows appearing after dark, floating a short distance above the ground, remaining motionless for long periods or moving silently across open country. The tales are shared with neighbouring Argentina but have long been part of Uruguayan rural culture in their own right.[uruguayeduca.anep.edu.uy]uruguayeduca.anep.edu.uyLeyenda de la Luz mala | Leyenda: La luz malaLeyenda de la Luz mala | Leyenda: La luz mala
In folklore, the lights are rarely treated as harmless curiosities. Different versions claim they represent restless souls, victims of violent deaths or spirits guarding hidden treasure. Country traditions also preserve practical advice for anyone unlucky enough to encounter one, including carrying a knife as protection or avoiding pursuit altogether. These customs belong firmly to popular belief rather than documented paranormal evidence, but they illustrate how deeply the stories became woven into rural life.[uruguayeduca.anep.edu.uy]uruguayeduca.anep.edu.uyLeyenda de la Luz mala | Leyenda: La luz malaLeyenda de la Luz mala | Leyenda: La luz mala
The legend also became attached to particular landscapes. Areas such as the Sierra de las Ánimas in Maldonado acquired reputations as places where strange lights were especially common, reinforcing the connection between isolated countryside, local history and supernatural storytelling. Educational material produced in Uruguay still presents the legend as an important element of national oral tradition rather than as a literal account of unexplained phenomena.[uruguayeduca.anep.edu.uy]uruguayeduca.anep.edu.uyLeyenda de la Luz mala | Leyenda: La luz malaLeyenda de la Luz mala | Leyenda: La luz mala
Why the folklore persisted
Part of the legend’s longevity comes from the landscape itself. Uruguay contains vast stretches of sparsely populated farmland where artificial lighting is limited and distant lights can be difficult to judge. Under such conditions, unfamiliar natural or human-made light sources can appear unusually isolated and dramatic.
Several natural mechanisms have been suggested over the years, although none explains every traditional story:
- Atmospheric effects that distort the appearance of distant lights.
- Combustion or luminescence associated with decaying organic material, historically proposed for similar ghost-light traditions elsewhere, although modern researchers regard this as an incomplete explanation.
- Astronomical objects appearing unusually bright near the horizon.
- Human activities, including vehicle headlights, agricultural machinery or distant settlements seen under favourable atmospheric conditions.
Importantly, the historical legend predates electric lighting across much of rural Uruguay. That suggests the stories cannot simply be dismissed as modern technological misunderstandings. Instead, they developed within a cultural framework where unexplained lights were interpreted through religious belief, local history and inherited folklore rather than aviation or spaceflight.
The Paysandú sightings brought an old mystery into the smartphone era
In February 2023, reports of unusual lights near the Termas de Almirón area in Paysandú transformed an old rural motif into a thoroughly modern investigation.
Witnesses described groups of reddish lights appearing low over the southern horizon, brightening, fading and apparently changing formation over extended periods. Videos quickly spread online, while observers from several different locations reported seeing similar lights. Local officials, including Paysandú’s tourism director, publicly confirmed having witnessed the phenomenon themselves.[com.uy]elpais.com.uyFebruary 14, 2023…
What distinguished the case from ordinary folklore was the institutional response. Uruguay’s Air Force activated CRIDOVNI, its long-established commission responsible for investigating unidentified aerial reports. Investigators travelled to the area, interviewed witnesses, collected photographs and videos, compared viewing positions and checked aviation and aerospace data rather than relying solely on testimony.[com.uy]telenoche.com.uyTelenoche CRIDOVNI viajó a Paysandú para investigar luces extrañasCRIDOVNI viajó a Paysandú para investigar luces extrañasFebruary 13, 2023…
During the early stages of the inquiry, officials stressed that the phenomenon remained unidentified while evidence was still being gathered. That cautious approach reflected CRIDOVNI’s practice of treating reports as aviation observations requiring investigation rather than immediate proof of extraordinary causes.[EL PAIS]elpais.com.uyEL PAÍS Uruguay…
What investigators eventually concluded
After examining witness statements, photographic evidence and aerospace records, CRIDOVNI announced that the principal Paysandú sightings of 11 February 2023 corresponded to passes of SpaceX Starlink satellites.
According to the commission, the timing, direction, altitude and appearance matched satellite trains crossing the sky. Similar reports received from elsewhere in Uruguay during the same period were likewise attributed to Starlink launches occurring that month.[com.uy]montevideo.com.uyMontevideo PortalFuerza Aérea identificó qué eran las luces avistadas en el cielo de Paysandú en febreroMay 2, 2023…
For sceptics, the investigation demonstrates how unfamiliar satellite constellations can generate convincing mystery-light reports, particularly when several bright objects appear together and gradually fade from view.
For believers, however, the episode remains noteworthy for a different reason. The reports were numerous, involved multiple independent witnesses and prompted a formal military investigation before any conclusion was reached. In that sense, the case illustrates how unusual aerial observations can genuinely puzzle observers without ultimately requiring a paranormal explanation.
Why these lights keep returning
The enduring fascination of Uruguay’s rural lights comes from the way each generation interprets similar experiences through its own cultural lens.
In earlier centuries, isolated lights became warnings from the spirit world or signs of hidden graves. Today, the same visual experience is more likely to become a viral social-media clip, a UFO discussion or an aviation investigation.
Yet the underlying ingredients remain remarkably consistent:
- Remote landscapes with excellent views of the night sky.
- Witnesses observing unfamiliar lights without immediate context.
- Stories spreading rapidly through local communities.
- Competing explanations emerging before firm evidence becomes available.
- A small residue of uncertainty that keeps the stories alive.
The mechanism changes, but the human response changes much less.
Why the mystery lights matter in Uruguay’s Fortean tradition
Uruguay’s mystery-light tradition is valuable precisely because it spans both folklore and documented investigation.
The legend of the evil light preserves centuries of rural belief about strange nocturnal lights, showing how communities explained unusual experiences before modern science and aviation. The Paysandú episode demonstrates that contemporary reports follow a similar narrative arc—initial surprise, widespread speculation, systematic investigation and, sometimes, an ordinary explanation.
Rather than weakening the country’s Fortean heritage, that combination strengthens it. The folklore reveals how mysterious lights acquire cultural meaning, while the modern investigations show how unusual observations can be examined carefully without assuming either supernatural forces or instant debunking.
That balance between curiosity and evidence is one of the defining characteristics of Uruguay’s wider strange-history record.
