Why the language changed from UFO to UAP

During the twenty-first century, official terminology gradually shifted from “unidentified flying object” to “unidentified anomalous phenomena”.

The newer phrase deliberately avoids assumptions that the object is flying, airborne or even a physical craft. Why America’s UFO files still fascinate people

America’s UFO archive has become part of the country’s modern folklore because it combines genuine mystery with documented history. Unlike many legends, the story is preserved in military memoranda, congressional hearings, scientific reports and thousands of witness statements rather than only in oral tradition.

For believers, these records suggest that some important questions remain unanswered. For sceptics, they demonstrate how uncertainty, secrecy, misidentification and incomplete evidence can generate enduring myths without requiring supernatural explanations.

Perhaps the most enduring lesson is that “unidentified” is not a final explanation but a temporary description. Some reports eventually become identifiable as better evidence emerges, while others remain unresolved because the necessary information was never collected.
