Introduction
The towering raffia figure known as the Zangbeto is one of Benin’s most striking and frequently misunderstood traditions. To visitors it can resemble an oversized spinning haystack with no visible performer, prompting the obvious question: is it simply a cleverly concealed costume, or is it genuinely believed to be a spirit? The answer depends on whether the question is being asked as a stage magician, an anthropologist, or a believer. Within the Ogu communities of southern Benin, the Zangbeto is not treated as an ordinary masquerade but as a sacred institution whose authority rests on ritual, secrecy and community trust. The famous claim that the costume is “empty” is therefore not merely a trick of performance. It lies at the heart of how the Zangbeto’s role as guardian, judge and protector is understood.
Guardians of the night in public life
The Zangbeto tradition belongs primarily to the Ogu (also called Gun or Egun) people of coastal Benin, neighbouring Togo and parts of south-western Nigeria. The name is commonly translated as “people of the night” or “night-watchmen”, reflecting its historical role as a community policing institution rather than an entertainment troupe. Ethnographic studies describe Zangbeto societies as responsible for maintaining order, deterring theft, settling disputes and enforcing communal rules before modern police forces existed.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
Unlike many ceremonial masquerades that appear only during festivals, Zangbeto performances have traditionally been linked to real social authority. Their appearances could accompany patrols, important public ceremonies, funerals, initiations and religious festivals. Even today, although the formal policing role has diminished, the figures remain symbols of vigilance, justice and collective responsibility rather than simply colourful folklore.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
This mixture of ritual and practical authority helps explain why the Zangbeto occupies such an unusual place in Benin’s Fortean landscape. It is neither easily classed as theatre nor straightforwardly understood as law enforcement.
Why does the costume appear to be empty?
The mystery that attracts the greatest attention concerns what, if anything, is inside the towering raffia structure.
The costume itself consists of densely layered raffia built around a light framework, often more than two metres high. During performances it spins rapidly, changes direction and sometimes appears to move with surprising agility despite having no visible legs or arms. To outside observers this naturally suggests concealed performers or stage illusion.
Within Vodun belief, however, the official explanation is different. The Zangbeto is understood not as a disguise worn by a person but as a vessel temporarily inhabited by a spiritual force. Some ceremonies include public demonstrations in which sections of the costume are assembled or lifted before spectators to reinforce the claim that no ordinary person occupies the interior before ritual invocation. Community members present these demonstrations as evidence of the Zangbeto’s spiritual nature rather than as entertainment.[Ouidah Origins]ouidahorigins.comOuidah Origins Discover Zangbeto Vodun entities OuidahThe question every visitor eventually asks: is there anyone inside? From a sceptical perspective, these displays are interpreted very differently. Researchers and experienced observers generally point out that ritual secrecy, carefully controlled viewing angles, performance skill and knowledge known only to initiated members could account for much of what audiences see. Because outsiders are not permitted access to every stage of preparation, there is no independent verification that resolves the question conclusively.
The result is an enduring ambiguity. Believers see demonstrations confirming spiritual presence, while sceptics see demonstrations that preserve an effective ritual mystery.
Why the mystery is never fully explained
The “empty costume question” persists partly because it is the wrong question from the tradition’s own point of view.
Initiated members are expected to preserve ritual secrecy. Ethnographic accounts describe the Zangbeto as belonging to an organised society whose authority depends upon restricted knowledge, discipline and initiation. Asking members to reveal every mechanism is therefore rather like demanding that judges disclose private deliberations or clergy reveal sacred rites. The secrecy is considered part of the institution itself rather than an inconvenience for curious visitors.[Wikipedia]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.
This has several consequences.
- Religious significance: revealing sacred knowledge may be regarded as a violation rather than an act of education.
- Community authority: uncertainty reinforces the respect necessary for the institution to perform its social role.
- Performance tradition: the inability of outsiders to distinguish ritual from illusion becomes part of the experience itself.
From the standpoint of folklore, this is a familiar pattern. Many ritual societies derive authority not from proving supernatural claims scientifically but from maintaining a carefully protected boundary between insiders and outsiders.
Performance, secrecy and community authority
Modern audiences often encounter Zangbeto through festivals, tourism or viral online videos showing spinning raffia figures apparently producing unexpected objects or animals from beneath the costume. Such performances naturally invite speculation about hidden compartments, sleight of hand or paranormal intervention.
Reports of these displays vary considerably, and they are rarely documented under controlled conditions. Claims involving disappearing objects or the sudden appearance of animals circulate widely in popular accounts, but they remain anecdotal and should not be treated as independently verified evidence of supernatural events.[Ouidah Origins]ouidahorigins.comOuidah Origins Discover Zangbeto Vodun entities OuidahThe question every visitor eventually asks: is there anyone inside? What is much better documented is the social effect. The spectacle encourages discipline, reinforces respect for tradition and reminds spectators that communal order is backed by powers understood to exceed ordinary individual authority. Whether interpreted as religious experience, sophisticated ritual theatre or a combination of both, the performances achieve their intended cultural purpose.
This also explains why photography and attempts to expose supposed “secrets” may be regarded as disrespectful in some communities. The issue is not simply protecting an illusion but preserving the dignity and effectiveness of a living religious institution.
Why the debate continues
For Fortean readers, the Zangbeto occupies an unusual middle ground between folklore and unexplained experience.
There is no reliable evidence demonstrating that an invisible spirit literally animates the raffia form. Equally, there is no single exposed mechanism that has ended the mystery for everyone. Most documented descriptions come either from practitioners explaining the tradition from within or from outside observers who were not granted unrestricted access to the ritual process.
That leaves three broad interpretations.
- Religious interpretation: the Zangbeto genuinely becomes inhabited by a spiritual presence during ritual.
- Performance interpretation: highly trained initiates, protected by secrecy and careful choreography, create effects that outsiders misinterpret.
- Anthropological interpretation: the important question is not whether the costume is objectively empty but why the community accepts and maintains the tradition as a source of legitimate authority.
These explanations are not equally persuasive to every audience, but together they explain why the Zangbeto continues to fascinate. The mystery survives not because it has defeated scientific investigation, but because its purpose has never been to satisfy scientific curiosity. It exists to embody communal protection, religious belief and inherited authority in a form that remains deliberately difficult to reduce to either mere costume or unquestioned miracle.
