Introduction
The tale of the schooner Zaca is Monaco’s best-known ghost story, but it is also one of its easiest to misunderstand. The yacht itself is real, its remarkable history is well documented, and its association with Hollywood star Errol Flynn is beyond dispute. The haunting, however, belongs to a much later layer of folklore. Reports of phantom footsteps, music, laughter and sightings of Flynn’s ghost emerged only after the vessel had fallen into neglect on the French Riviera decades after the actor’s death, before the restored yacht eventually became a familiar sight in Monaco’s harbour. The result is an unusual blend of maritime ghost lore, celebrity mythology and Riviera glamour that has become one of the principality’s signature Fortean stories.
The documented life of Zaca
Long before it acquired a supernatural reputation, Zaca had an extraordinary career. Built in California in 1930 for wealthy explorer Templeton Crocker, the 118-foot wooden schooner was designed for scientific expeditions as well as luxury cruising. Crocker sailed widely through the Pacific with naturalists and artists, collecting specimens for the California Academy of Sciences before the yacht was requisitioned by the US Navy during the Second World War as the auxiliary vessel USS Zaca (IX-73). After military service it was sold back into civilian hands.[Wikipedia]WikipediaUSS Zaca (IX-73November 12, 2007 — USS Zaca (IX-73) is a wooden-hulled, schooner-rigged yacht. In 1946 Flynn bought the yacht and transformed it into perhaps the most glamorous private vessel in Hollywood’s orbit. He invested heavily in restoring her and used her for Mediterranean and Caribbean voyages, scientific cruises with his marine-biologist father, and famously as a filming location for The Lady from Shanghai, directed by Orson Welles. The yacht became inseparable from Flynn’s adventurous public image, where genuine seamanship mixed freely with stories of lavish parties and celebrity excess.[Wikipedia]WikipediaUSS Zaca (IX-73November 12, 2007 — USS Zaca (IX-73) is a wooden-hulled, schooner-rigged yacht. Flynn himself died in 1959 in Canada while negotiating arrangements connected with the yacht rather than aboard her. That detail matters because many later retellings imply he died at sea or on Zaca itself, giving the ghost story an emotional logic that history does not support.[classicsailor.com]classicsailor.comerrol flynn and his cruise of the zacaErrol Flynn, the Cruise of the Zaca4 Sept 2018 — At one stage the locals arranged for a double exorcism by both Anglican and Catholic pri…
Ghost claims, sounds and exorcism stories
The haunting tradition did not arise during Flynn’s ownership. Instead, it developed after the yacht had been abandoned in the harbour at Villefranche-sur-Mer, close to Monaco, where it deteriorated badly through the 1960s and 1970s.
According to the most frequently repeated accounts, people reported:
- hearing dance music, laughter and voices apparently coming from an empty vessel;
- seeing unexplained lights aboard after dark;
- witnessing a solitary figure resembling Flynn walking the deck;
- feeling an unsettling presence while exploring the neglected yacht.
The most dramatic episode concerns an alleged double exorcism in 1979. Several later maritime histories and sailing magazines repeat the claim that both Anglican and Catholic clergy were invited aboard after persistent local reports of paranormal activity. The ceremony supposedly failed to silence the strange sounds permanently, although versions differ over exactly what happened afterwards.[classicsailor.com]classicsailor.comerrol flynn and his cruise of the zacaErrol Flynn, the Cruise of the Zaca4 Sept 2018 — At one stage the locals arranged for a double exorcism by both Anglican and Catholic pri…
It is worth noting that contemporary newspaper reporting of the alleged exorcism is remarkably scarce. The story survives mainly through later retellings, ghost books and sailing publications rather than detailed primary documentation. That absence does not disprove the event, but it does make it difficult to verify precisely what occurred, who organised it or whether the reports had already become embellished by local folklore.
How strong is the evidence?
As a haunting case, Zaca rests on tradition rather than investigation.
Several points favour a cautious reading:
- The reported phenomena emerged after years of abandonment, when an ageing wooden hull naturally produced creaks, shifting timbers and unusual acoustics.
- The yacht’s celebrity connection made any unusual occurrence inherently more memorable than it would have been aboard an anonymous vessel.
- Most detailed ghost narratives appear decades after the supposed events rather than in contemporary investigative records.
- Independent witness testimony is limited and often recycled through later paranormal books or popular articles rather than original interviews.
Unlike classic psychical-research cases, there are no surviving instrument records, systematic investigations or extensive collections of signed witness statements. Instead, the haunting functions primarily as an oral and published legend attached to a famous object.
Believers argue that the consistency of recurring themes—music, laughter and Flynn’s apparition—suggests a genuine tradition rather than isolated invention. Sceptics counter that these elements closely match Flynn’s enduring public image as a charismatic host whose parties became legendary during his lifetime. In that interpretation, the ghost behaves almost exactly as popular culture expects Errol Flynn’s ghost to behave.
Why Monaco adopted a Hollywood haunting
Although the alleged paranormal events belong largely to nearby Villefranche-sur-Mer, the restored Zaca eventually became associated with Monaco after businessman Roberto Memmo acquired and painstakingly restored the schooner in the early 1990s. Once returned to immaculate condition, the yacht established Port de Fontvieille as its winter base and became a familiar participant in prestigious Mediterranean sailing events.[Wikipedia]WikipediaUSS Zaca (IX-73November 12, 2007 — USS Zaca (IX-73) is a wooden-hulled, schooner-rigged yacht. That relocation gave Monaco something unusual: a ghost story linked not to medieval ruins or ancient castles but to twentieth-century celebrity culture. It fitted perfectly with the principality’s public image, where luxury yachts, cinema history and Riviera mythology naturally overlap.
The legend also reflects a wider tradition of haunted ships. Maritime folklore has long associated vessels with lingering presences, unexplained noises and phantom crews, partly because ships accumulate long, eventful histories while remaining recognisable physical objects. Zaca differs from many haunted-vessel stories because the supposed ghost is a globally recognised celebrity whose adventurous reputation already bordered on myth before the paranormal tradition emerged.
Why the story endures
The endurance of the Zaca legend says as much about memory as about ghosts. Every element reinforces the next: a beautiful wooden schooner, an adventurous Hollywood icon, years of abandonment, rumours of mysterious sounds, an alleged exorcism, and finally a triumphant restoration in Monaco’s glamorous harbour.
For Monaco’s catalogue of strange history, the story occupies an unusual middle ground. The yacht’s construction, ownership and restoration are matters of historical record. The haunting remains unverified folklore supported mainly by repeated testimony and later retellings rather than hard evidence. That combination makes Zaca less a convincing paranormal case than a vivid example of how celebrity, maritime tradition and place can combine to create a remarkably persistent modern ghost legend.
