Introduction

Sri Lanka’s UFO stories are less about crashed spacecraft than about how unusual lights become meaningful. Reports of glowing objects over Bandarawela, Kandy and other parts of the island have repeatedly moved through the same cycle: an unexpected sighting, excited media coverage, official caution, and later attempts to explain what witnesses may have seen. Alongside these modern reports sits a much older tradition in which unusual lights in the sky could be interpreted as divine signs, auspicious omens or messages linked to sacred places. That overlap between astronomy, religion, folklore and contemporary UFO culture gives Sri Lanka’s sky-light stories their distinctive character. Rather than providing evidence that extraterrestrial visitors have been proven, they reveal how the same mysterious light can be understood very differently depending on the observer’s cultural expectations and the information available at the time.

Why do Sri Lanka’s sky lights become UFOs?

Unlike countries with long military UFO archives, Sri Lanka’s reports have usually emerged through local newspapers, eyewitness testimony and civilian investigators. Most accounts involve luminous objects rather than structured craft seen at close range.

Several factors encourage UFO interpretations:

  • Bright planets such as Mars or Venus can appear unusually prominent under clear tropical skies.
  • Atmospheric conditions near the horizon can make celestial objects shimmer, change colour or appear to move.
  • Lanterns, aircraft, satellites and, more recently, drones have all generated mistaken reports.
  • Strong religious traditions already treat unusual heavenly phenomena as potentially meaningful rather than merely astronomical.

This combination means that unusual lights often attract both scientific explanations and supernatural interpretations at the same time.

Bandarawela, Kandy and waves of reported lights

Bandarawela’s 1998 sightings

Sri Lanka’s best-known UFO episode began in Bandarawela in April 1998 after schoolchildren reported seeing a disc-shaped object with coloured lights near their primary school. Other residents subsequently described unusual cylindrical or glowing objects in the area, and newspapers reported a surge of similar claims from neighbouring districts. The alleged landing became one of the country’s most discussed UFO stories because it combined young witnesses, multiple independent reports and claims of physical traces on the ground, although none were documented to a standard that convinced scientists.[The Sunday Times]sundaytimes.lkThe Sunday TimesThe Sunday Times Plus SectionApril 2, 2000…Published: April 2, 2000

Civilian UFO groups later catalogued the case and argued that the similarities between different eyewitness accounts made outright fabrication unlikely. Critics responded that intense publicity can influence later reports, with witnesses unconsciously matching details they have already heard through the media.[Roar Media Archive]archive.roar.mediaMedia Archive Roar Media ArchiveRoar Media ArchiveRoar Media Archive - Of Aliens And UFOs ‒ Sri Lanka’s Strangest Sightings…

The Kandy red light

In early 2000 attention shifted to the hills around Kandy after motorists reported an oblong red light hovering above paddy fields before slowly descending. Witnesses described a steady blinking rhythm rather than rapid manoeuvres usually associated with dramatic UFO claims. Contemporary reporting presented the event cautiously, noting both the mystery and the possibility of ordinary explanations rather than claiming an alien encounter.[The Sunday Times]sundaytimes.lkThe Sunday TimesThe Sunday Times Plus SectionFebruary 6, 2000…Published: February 6, 2000

The Kandy episode illustrates an important pattern in Sri Lankan UFO history: many reports concern distant lights whose apparent movement is difficult to judge accurately against a dark sky.

Later waves

Additional clusters of reports have appeared periodically, including claims from Polonnaruwa and elsewhere of groups of glowing objects moving together. Civilian UFO organisations argued that repeated observations over short periods deserved investigation, while sceptics noted that mass attention often encourages more people to reinterpret ordinary lights as extraordinary ones.[Roar Media Archive]archive.roar.mediaMedia Archive Roar Media ArchiveRoar Media ArchiveRoar Media Archive - Of Aliens And UFOs ‒ Sri Lanka’s Strangest Sightings…

Radar denials, Mars and ordinary explanations

One reason Sri Lankan UFO stories gained attention was that they occasionally prompted official responses.

During a wave of reports in late 2012, the Sri Lanka Air Force stated that its radar systems had not detected unidentified aircraft corresponding to the public sightings. Officials emphasised that there was no evidence of unknown vehicles entering the country’s airspace, even while acknowledging widespread public interest.[Emirates 24|7]emirates247.comEmirates 24|7December 14, 2012…Published: December 14, 2012

At roughly the same time, astronomers and science communicators pointed to more mundane possibilities. Mars was especially bright during parts of this period, while Venus has often been mistaken worldwide for a hovering craft because it can remain apparently stationary for long periods and flash different colours near the horizon through atmospheric turbulence. Bright planets also seem to “follow” moving observers because of simple perspective, a common source of mistaken UFO reports.

None of these explanations accounts for every historical report, but they explain why many sightings involve:

  • stationary or slowly moving lights;
  • colour changes between red, orange and white;
  • apparent hovering over hills;
  • disappearance after clouds form or dawn approaches.

These characteristics fit well with astronomical objects viewed under changing atmospheric conditions.

Divine lights and modern UFO vocabulary

Long before the term “UFO” entered popular language, unusual lights in Sri Lanka could be interpreted through religious traditions.

In Buddhist and Hindu storytelling, brilliant lights sometimes accompany holy figures, sacred relics or miraculous events. Pilgrimage traditions associated with mountains and temples occasionally describe mysterious illuminations as signs of spiritual presence rather than physical objects travelling through the atmosphere. Such accounts belong to religious narrative rather than eyewitness investigations, but they demonstrate that extraordinary lights already occupied an important place in the island’s cultural imagination.

When twentieth-century UFO culture spread through newspapers, films and television, this older framework did not disappear. Instead, the vocabulary changed. A mysterious light that might once have been described as a divine manifestation could now also be discussed as a possible spacecraft, particularly by younger generations familiar with science fiction.

The result is not a replacement of one belief by another but an overlap of interpretations. Different observers can witness the same phenomenon while reaching entirely different conclusions.

Why these stories endure

Sri Lanka’s sky-light reports remain culturally significant because they occupy the borderland between observation and interpretation.

Believers often emphasise multiple witnesses, recurring regional reports and the absence of complete explanations for every case. Sceptics point out that eyewitness perception of distant lights is notoriously unreliable, especially at night, and that astronomy, atmospheric optics and human psychology account for many famous UFO reports around the world. Contemporary physicists in Sri Lanka have likewise noted that scientific institutions regularly receive purported UFO videos, most of which prove difficult to verify and frequently have conventional explanations once investigated.[Daily Mirror]dailymirror.lkDaily MirrorDaily Mirror - Sri Lanka Latest Breaking News and Headlines - Print Edition Frequent influx of purported UFO footage: Profess…

For Fortean history, that unresolved middle ground is precisely what makes the stories memorable. Bandarawela, Kandy and later sighting waves are valuable less because they demonstrate extraterrestrial visitors than because they show how modern UFO narratives merged with much older traditions of reading significance into the night sky. In Sri Lanka, mysterious lights continue to illuminate not only the heavens but also the changing ways people understand wonder, uncertainty and the possibility that the familiar world still holds surprises.
