How natural fission worked

The phrase “natural nuclear reactor” sounds contradictory because reactors are normally associated with advanced engineering. Oklo worked because the Earth, two billion years ago, happened to provide all the necessary ingredients.

At that time, natural uranium contained roughly three per cent uranium-235 instead of today’s 0.72 per cent. The remaining conditions were unusually favourable:

  • Rich uranium ore accumulated in concentrated deposits.
  • Groundwater seeped through the rock and acted as a neutron moderator, slowing neutrons enough to sustain fission.
  • Heat from the reaction eventually boiled away the water.
  • Without water, the reaction stopped automatically.
  • As the rock cooled and groundwater returned, the cycle began again.
