Introduction
The so-called Mátra creature is one of Hungary’s clearest examples of an internet-age cryptid: a supposed forest monster that briefly appeared convincing enough to spread through newspapers, radio and social media before being exposed as a deliberate fabrication. Unlike older rural legends that evolved over generations, the Mátra story demonstrated how modern folklore can be created almost overnight through a mixture of convincing photographs, fictional eyewitnesses, eager media coverage and online sharing. Rather than providing evidence for an unknown animal, the episode has become an unusually well-documented case study in how rumours, hoaxes and genuine curiosity interact in contemporary Hungary.[telex]telex.huTakács MártonHa létezik a mátrai fanyűvő, akkor van kömörői hidrovámpír…January 22, 2023 — 22 Jan 2023 — Mátranovákon 2022-ben felbukkant újra…
The reported forest creature claims
The reports centred on the forests around Mátranovák in the Mátra Mountains of northern Hungary. During early 2022, numerous Hungarian media outlets carried stories about a mysterious humanoid creature known as the Fanyűvő (“tree-eater” or “tree-devourer” in popular translation). According to the published accounts, a witness described encountering a filthy, pale, foul-smelling being that moved strangely through the woodland and emitted an unusual chirping or buzzing sound. Grainy black-and-white photographs appeared to support the story, giving it the familiar look of many international cryptid reports.[telex]telex.huTakács MártonHa létezik a mátrai fanyűvő, akkor van kömörői hidrovámpír…January 22, 2023 — 22 Jan 2023 — Mátranovákon 2022-ben felbukkant újra…
The story followed a pattern familiar from Bigfoot and other modern cryptid traditions. There was an apparently ordinary witness, an isolated forest location, deliberately ambiguous imagery and enough descriptive detail to encourage readers to imagine an unknown species while leaving little that could actually be verified.
Within days the reports had spread well beyond the original publication. Tabloid newspapers expanded the story into multiple articles, online news sites repeated it, and the fictional witness even appeared in interviews after journalists accepted the identity at face value. The rapid circulation gave the impression that multiple independent sources existed when, in reality, many reports traced back to the same fictional origin.[telex]telex.huTakács MártonHa létezik a mátrai fanyűvő, akkor van kömörői hidrovámpír…January 22, 2023 — 22 Jan 2023 — Mátranovákon 2022-ben felbukkant újra…
Hoax, media experiment or mistaken sighting?
The most important twist is that the famous Mátra creature was not exposed by wildlife experts discovering an ordinary animal. Instead, its creators eventually revealed that the entire episode had been an intentional artistic and media experiment.
Photographer K. Takács Márton and poet Kazsimér Soma later explained that the witness never existed. The supposed eyewitness, “Balázs Karmos”, was a fictional character, while the accompanying photograph had been carefully staged. Their wider project explored Hungarian cryptozoology, local folklore and the willingness of modern media to amplify dramatic but weakly sourced stories.[telex]telex.huTakács MártonHa létezik a mátrai fanyűvő, akkor van kömörői hidrovámpír…January 22, 2023 — 22 Jan 2023 — Mátranovákon 2022-ben felbukkant újra…
The creators described the project as deliberately blurring the boundary between authentic folklore and invented legend. Their work drew inspiration from genuine regional beliefs while introducing entirely fictional creatures such as the Mátra Fanyűvő, the Kömörő “hydrovampire” and other imaginary beings. The intention was not simply to fool readers for amusement but to investigate how legends form, how journalists verify claims, and how communities respond when confronted with apparently mysterious events.[telex]telex.huTakács MártonHa létezik a mátrai fanyűvő, akkor van kömörői hidrovámpír…January 22, 2023 — 22 Jan 2023 — Mátranovákon 2022-ben felbukkant újra…
The experiment produced revealing results. Some journalists investigated further and declined to publish. Others reproduced the material with little independent verification. As the story spread, repetition itself gave the creature increasing credibility, illustrating how easily a modern myth can acquire the appearance of established local tradition.
Why the story mattered beyond the hoax
Although the Fanyűvő itself was fictional, the episode revealed several genuine features of contemporary folklore.
First, it showed that people remain attracted to stories about hidden animals living in remote forests. The Mátra Mountains are extensive enough to feel mysterious, making them a believable setting for an alleged unknown creature.
Second, the case demonstrated that photographs continue to carry persuasive power even when they are indistinct. Rather than weakening belief, poor-quality images often encourage viewers to fill gaps with imagination, much as famous Bigfoot and lake-monster photographs have done elsewhere.
Third, the affair exposed how modern news ecosystems differ from traditional folklore. Older legends spread gradually through oral storytelling, whereas the Mátra creature moved rapidly through online news, social media, radio programmes and repeated reporting, creating the illusion of multiple independent confirmations. Research into online misinformation consistently shows that repetition across platforms can make unsupported claims appear increasingly credible, particularly when the original source becomes obscured.[arXiv]arxiv.orgOpen source on arxiv.org.
Why modern cryptids spread so quickly
The Mátra creature illustrates several mechanisms that help internet-age cryptids flourish:
- A plausible location. Dense woodland encourages the belief that unusual animals could remain unseen.
- An apparently ordinary witness. Readers often trust accounts that resemble everyday personal testimony.
- Ambiguous visual evidence. Grainy photographs generate discussion without providing enough detail for easy refutation.
- Rapid republication. Once several outlets repeat the same story, many readers assume independent verification has occurred.
- International familiarity. Audiences already understand the template established by Bigfoot, the Yeti and similar creatures, making local versions instantly recognisable.[telex.hu]telex.huTakács MártonHa létezik a mátrai fanyűvő, akkor van kömörői hidrovámpír…January 22, 2023 — 22 Jan 2023 — Mátranovákon 2022-ben felbukkant újra…
These ingredients do not prove the existence of unknown animals, but they do explain why such stories continue to emerge despite widespread public awareness of previous hoaxes.
Did the Mátra creature become a modern legend?
In an unusual sense, yes. The creature failed as zoological evidence but succeeded as folklore.
Today the Fanyűvő is discussed less as a mysterious animal than as an example of how legends are manufactured, transmitted and remembered. Articles, exhibitions and interviews about the project have effectively given the fictional creature a place within Hungary’s broader strange-history tradition. The story now survives because people remember both the monster and the deception that created it.[telex]telex.huTakács MártonHa létezik a mátrai fanyűvő, akkor van kömörői hidrovámpír…January 22, 2023 — 22 Jan 2023 — Mátranovákon 2022-ben felbukkant újra…
For students of Forteana, this makes the Mátra creature especially valuable. Rather than asking whether the monster existed, the more revealing question is why so many people found the claim believable. The answer lies in the continuing appeal of unexplored forests, compelling storytelling, familiar cryptid conventions and the extraordinary speed with which the internet can transform a carefully staged joke into something resembling authentic local legend.
