Introduction

Tsodilo Hills is Botswana’s most important sacred landscape and one of Africa’s richest rock-art sites, but its greatest archaeological controversy centres on a single cave. In 2006, archaeologist Sheila Coulson and colleagues argued that a rock formation in Rhino Cave resembling a giant python, together with hundreds of deliberately pecked cup-shaped marks and carefully deposited artefacts, represented a ritual sanctuary used around 70,000 years ago. If correct, the discovery would push organised symbolic religion far deeper into human prehistory than previously recognised. The claim attracted worldwide headlines, but it also prompted a vigorous response from other archaeologists who had excavated the same cave. Their objections created one of the best-known debates in African archaeology: not over whether Tsodilo is culturally important—it unquestionably is—but over how much evidence is needed before an intriguing pattern becomes a convincing interpretation.[world-archaeology.com]world-archaeology.comWorld ArchaeologyRitual: Organised Activity Identified as World's Oldest6 Mar 2007 — The cave itself is so secluded and access so difficu…

The sacred hills and their living traditions

Long before the “Python Cave” became an archaeological headline, Tsodilo Hills occupied a central place in the beliefs of local San and Hambukushu communities. The hills are regarded as a place of ancestral spirits and origin traditions, where particular caves, springs and rock shelters retain spiritual importance today. Rather than being an abandoned prehistoric monument, Tsodilo is recognised as a living cultural landscape whose religious significance continued into the recent past.

This continuity matters because it demonstrates that ritual activity at Tsodilo is entirely plausible. Archaeologists have long documented repeated human occupation of the hills over tens of thousands of years, while thousands of rock paintings show that the landscape remained culturally significant across many different periods. The existence of enduring sacred traditions, however, does not automatically prove that every striking feature belongs to the earliest phases of occupation. That distinction lies at the heart of the later dispute.[wikipedia.org]WikipediaOpen source on wikipedia.org.

What the Python Cave claim said

The cave at the centre of the controversy is generally known as Rhino Cave, named after a white-painted rhinoceros on one wall. Coulson’s team focused instead on another wall where a naturally projecting quartzite surface resembles the head of a large python when viewed by flickering firelight. They argued that this resemblance had been deliberately enhanced by people who pecked hundreds of cup-like depressions into the rock surface.

The interpretation rested on several strands of evidence taken together rather than on the python-shaped rock alone:

  • The rock face resembles a python’s head under certain lighting conditions.[snakecult.net]snakecult.netpython rock hoaxDebunking the So-Called 70000-Year-Old 'Python Rock' of…31 Jul 2025 — Why the celebrated 'python' carving in Botswana's Tsodilo Hills…
  • Between roughly 300 and 400 cupules, or pecked depressions, appear across its surface.
  • Excavations recovered Middle Stone Age stone points, some apparently burnt before being placed in the cave.
  • Dating evidence from nearby deposits suggested Middle Stone Age activity approximately 70,000 years ago.
  • The researchers proposed that the cave formed a ceremonial rather than domestic space, possibly linked to snake symbolism still important in later San traditions.[World Archaeology]world-archaeology.comWorld ArchaeologyRitual: Organised Activity Identified as World's Oldest6 Mar 2007 — The cave itself is so secluded and access so difficu…

The interpretation was especially influential because it touched on one of archaeology’s biggest questions: when humans first developed complex symbolic behaviour. Around the early 2000s, many researchers associated sophisticated ritual mainly with later periods of human evolution. If Rhino Cave truly represented organised worship at around 70,000 years ago, it would significantly reshape that timeline. Media reports quickly described it as the world’s oldest known ritual site, although that wording went beyond the caution found in the underlying archaeological interpretation.[World Archaeology]world-archaeology.comWorld ArchaeologyRitual: Organised Activity Identified as World's Oldest6 Mar 2007 — The cave itself is so secluded and access so difficu…

Why archaeologists urged caution

The strongest criticism came from Lawrence Robbins, Alec Campbell, George Brook and Michael Murphy, archaeologists who had previously excavated Rhino Cave. Their objection was not that ritual was impossible at Tsodilo, but that the specific evidence did not support the dramatic conclusions being reported.

One major criticism concerned the supposed python itself. The critics argued that the rock formation is fundamentally a natural geological feature. While some cupules are undoubtedly artificial, they questioned whether all were created at the same time or for the same purpose. Some depressions appear heavily weathered, while others look comparatively recent, suggesting they accumulated over many centuries rather than during a single prehistoric ritual episode.[Society of Africanist Archaeologists]africanistarchaeology.netSociety of Africanist ArchaeologistsbotswanaNyame Akumaby LH Robbins · Cited by 15 — While most archaeological excavation is rou- tine and the findings are mainly of research intere…

Dating also proved contentious. The frequently repeated figure of 70,000 years refers to archaeological deposits associated with Middle Stone Age occupation rather than directly dating the carved wall itself. Demonstrating that people occupied the cave at that time is not the same as proving they intentionally modified the rock to resemble a python during the same period. Critics argued that the dating evidence was therefore less decisive than many news reports implied.[Society of Africanist Archaeologists]africanistarchaeology.netSociety of Africanist ArchaeologistsbotswanaNyame Akumaby LH Robbins · Cited by 15 — While most archaeological excavation is rou- tine and the findings are mainly of research intere…

Other objections addressed the wider archaeological context:

  • Similar cupules occur at numerous nearby sites without forming obvious animal figures.
  • Ordinary stone tools and evidence of tool manufacture were present, weakening claims that the cave lacked everyday activity.
  • The painted animals belong to different artistic traditions and periods rather than a single coherent symbolic programme.
  • The proposed “secret chamber” for ritual specialists lacks independent archaeological support.[Society of Africanist Archaeologists]africanistarchaeology.netSociety of Africanist ArchaeologistsbotswanaNyame Akumaby LH Robbins · Cited by 15 — While most archaeological excavation is rou- tine and the findings are mainly of research intere…

Together, these arguments suggested that the spectacular interpretation depended on combining evidence from different periods into one narrative, something the critics regarded as methodologically unsound.

The dispute became as much about communication as archaeology

An unusual feature of the controversy was that it soon expanded beyond archaeology into a debate about science reporting.

Coulson responded that many of the most sensational claims being criticised had originated in newspaper articles and internet coverage rather than in her scientific publications. She argued that journalists had simplified lectures intended for general audiences, creating exaggerated headlines that spread rapidly online. She also criticised fellow archaeologists for attacking media summaries instead of engaging with the detailed academic evidence.[ResearchGate]researchgate.netResearch Gate Response to “World's Oldest Ritual Site? The 'Python Cave…30 Dec 2023 — Rhino Cave, located at the World Heritage site of Tsodilo Hills, is one of the three main Middle Stone…

This exchange illustrates a recurring problem in archaeology. Extraordinary discoveries often receive enormous publicity before detailed technical publications appear. Once headlines proclaim “the world’s oldest ritual”, later scholarly qualifications rarely receive equivalent attention. As a result, public memory often preserves the dramatic version even after specialists have narrowed or challenged the original interpretation.

Why the Python Cave still matters

Despite the disagreement, Rhino Cave remains scientifically important. Nobody disputes that Tsodilo Hills preserve exceptionally deep evidence of human occupation or that symbolic behaviour existed during the Middle Stone Age. The real question is whether this particular cave demonstrates a deliberately organised snake cult around 70,000 years ago.

Most archaeologists today adopt a more cautious position than the initial media coverage suggested. The cave undoubtedly contains genuine archaeological features, including ancient occupation layers, cupules and rock art. What remains uncertain is whether these features belong to one coherent prehistoric ritual programme or accumulated across many different periods of use. The available evidence has not produced a consensus.[sciencedirect.com]sciencedirect.comLate Pleistocene hydrological settings at world heritage…by M Geppert · 2021 · Cited by 5 — This study seeks to better un…

For readers interested in Botswana’s Fortean heritage, that uncertainty is precisely what makes the site compelling. Tsodilo does not depend on ghost stories or fabricated mysteries. Instead, it presents a rarer and more interesting puzzle: a sacred landscape where living spiritual traditions, remarkable archaeology and ambitious interpretations intersect, forcing researchers to distinguish carefully between what the evidence securely demonstrates and what remains an intriguing possibility.
