An Imperial Iranian Air Force F-4 Phantom II was first scrambled from Shahrokhi Air Base. According to the official report, as the aircraft approached the object its communications and instrumentation began to malfunction. Jafari later reported that he acquired the object on airborne radar while also observing it visually.
