Introduction

The story of Ecuador’s Cueva de los Tayos is one of the world’s most influential modern mystery legends. The cave itself is entirely real: a vast limestone system in the Amazonian foothills, famous for its colonies of oilbirds and for its long-standing importance to the local Shuar people. The supposed “metallic library”, however—a hidden archive of engraved metal plates left by an ancient civilisation or even extraterrestrial visitors—has never been verified despite decades of expeditions, publicity and speculation. The contrast between a genuine natural wonder and an extraordinary unproven claim is precisely what makes Tayos Cave one of Ecuador’s defining pieces of Fortean history.

The cave, oilbirds and Indigenous custodianship

Cueva de los Tayos lies in Ecuador’s Morona-Santiago Province on the eastern slopes of the Andes. Its name comes from the oilbirds, known locally as tayos, nocturnal cave-dwelling birds that navigate by echolocation and have nested there for generations. The cave is a genuine geological feature created by natural processes rather than human engineering, with shafts, underground rivers and extensive limestone passages.[Wikipedia]WikipediaCueva de los TayosCueva de los Tayos

Long before international explorers arrived, the cave was well known to the Shuar communities of the region. The Shuar have traditionally entered the cave for hunting and ceremonial purposes, and today access remains controlled through Indigenous organisations and local communities. This often disappears from sensational retellings, yet it is central to understanding the site: outsiders discovered a legend, but local people had lived with the cave for centuries.[Wikipedia]WikipediaCueva de los TayosCueva de los Tayos

Archaeological work has shown that humans have used the cave for thousands of years. Excavations have recovered ceramics, burials and other evidence of prehistoric occupation, demonstrating genuine historical importance without requiring lost super-civilisations or alien visitors.[Wikipedia]WikipediaCueva de los TayosCueva de los Tayos

How the ancient-astronaut legend spread

The metallic library story grew from claims associated with the Hungarian-born explorer Juan Móricz during the 1960s. Móricz asserted that he had discovered an underground complex containing remarkable artefacts, including engraved metal plates preserving ancient knowledge. He never produced convincing public documentation of such a discovery, but the idea proved irresistible.[Wikipedia]WikipediaCueva de los TayosCueva de los Tayos

The legend exploded internationally after Erich von Däniken published The Gold of the Gods in 1973. Already famous for promoting ancient-astronaut theories, von Däniken described immense artificial tunnels, mysterious statues and a library of metal books that he presented as evidence of an advanced lost civilisation connected with extraterrestrials. The book became a bestseller and transformed Tayos Cave into an international mystery destination.[Wikipedia]WikipediaErich von DänikenErich von Däniken

The story became even stranger when Móricz later disputed parts of von Däniken’s account. According to later reporting, Móricz stated that the author had not actually accompanied him through the cave in the manner described. Von Däniken subsequently acknowledged embellishing or inventing elements of his personal adventure narrative, although he continued promoting the broader mystery. This distinction is important: the fame of the metallic library rests far more on published storytelling than on documented archaeological evidence.[Wikipedia]WikipediaErich von DänikenErich von Däniken

The legend also became entangled with stories about collections assembled by Father Carlo Crespi in Cuenca, speculative links to Atlantis, Mormon traditions involving metal plates, and broader lost-civilisation myths. These overlapping narratives reinforced one another despite relying on different evidence and often incompatible historical claims.[The Portuguese Traveler]theportuguesetraveler.comcueva de los tayosThe Portuguese TravelerCueva de Los Tayos (Tayos Caves) in Ecuador19 Aug 2022 — In 1973, Erich von Däniken's book, 'Gold of the Gods,' cl…

The 1976 expedition and the missing evidence

If a metallic library existed, the 1976 Anglo-Ecuadorian expedition seemed the ideal opportunity to find it.

Organised by Scottish explorer Stan Hall, the expedition involved more than one hundred participants, including British and Ecuadorian military personnel, geologists, archaeologists, zoologists, experienced cave explorers and astronaut Neil Armstrong. It remains one of the largest cave expeditions ever mounted.[Wikipedia]WikipediaCueva de los TayosCueva de los Tayos

The team carefully surveyed major passages, mapped sections of the cave, collected geological and biological data, and investigated archaeological remains. Human burials and artefacts of genuine archaeological interest were documented, but no metallic library, artificial underground city or advanced technological relics were found. The cave’s principal structures were consistent with natural geological formation rather than vast engineered corridors.[Wikipedia]WikipediaCueva de los TayosCueva de los Tayos

Supporters of the legend did not regard this as a decisive failure. Some argued that the expedition had explored the wrong chamber, while others claimed the true library had been deliberately concealed or lay beyond unexplored passages. Such arguments effectively moved the claim beyond straightforward testing, because any unsuccessful search could be explained by suggesting the real location remained hidden.[Wikipedia]WikipediaCueva de los TayosCueva de los Tayos

Neil Armstrong’s presence also acquired a mythology of its own. His participation is sometimes presented as proof that governments secretly believed the extraordinary claims. A more ordinary explanation is that Armstrong supported a major scientific exploration of an important cave system. His involvement added prestige to the expedition, but it did not produce evidence supporting ancient-astronaut theories or a hidden archive of metal books.[barefootexpeditions.com]barefootexpeditions.comNeil ArmstrongLa Cueva de los Tayos1 Oct 2023 — The 1976 Expedition: Evidence Over Speculation · mapped extensive cave passages, · conducted geological…

Why believers and sceptics reach different conclusions

The Tayos mystery survives because both sides can point to genuine facts.

Believers often emphasise:

  • Móricz’s original testimony.
  • Reports of unusually straight passages and smooth rock surfaces.
  • The fact that not every part of the cave system has been fully explored.
  • Indigenous traditions that outsiders only partly understand.

Sceptics point instead to several key observations:

  • No expedition has produced the supposed engraved metal library.
  • Archaeological discoveries are consistent with prehistoric human occupation rather than an unknown technological civilisation.
  • Geological studies explain the cave’s principal features through natural limestone processes.
  • The most famous published account included admitted embellishment by its author.[Wikipedia]WikipediaErich von DänikenErich von Däniken

This does not make the cave uninteresting. Quite the opposite: it is an excellent example of how a real archaeological and geological site can become enveloped in narratives that far exceed the available evidence.

Why the legend still matters in Ecuadorian Forteana

Among Ecuador’s strange-history stories, Tayos Cave occupies a distinctive place because it sits at the intersection of genuine exploration, Indigenous knowledge, archaeology, adventure literature and global fringe culture.

Unlike many UFO reports or ghost stories, the location itself unquestionably exists and continues to be scientifically significant. The mystery lies not in whether there is a cave, but whether extraordinary claims about its contents were ever true.

The metallic library has become a cautionary tale about how modern myths develop. A handful of dramatic claims, amplified by bestselling books and repeated through television documentaries, magazines and the internet, created one of the twentieth century’s most enduring archaeological legends. Yet after decades of searching, the library remains absent from the physical record.

That gap between enduring legend and missing evidence is precisely why Cueva de los Tayos remains one of Ecuador’s defining Fortean landmarks. The cave continues to reward explorers, scientists and visitors—but so far only with genuine natural history, authentic archaeology and an unusually revealing case study in how modern mysteries are made.
