Local tradition connects the creature with the famous Frösö Runestone through a legend in which a gigantic serpent was magically bound beneath the waters. Although the runestone itself is a genuine Viking Age monument, the monster story attached to it survives in later folklore rather than as a historical record carved into the stone. Over time the legend helped give the monster an apparent deep history, making it feel older and more rooted than many modern cryptid traditions.

An equally remarkable episode came in 1986, when the county administrative authorities placed the monster and any supposed offspring under legal protection. The decision was unusual enough to attract international attention. While partly humorous in tone, it reflected the monster’s importance as part of Jämtland’s local heritage. The protection order remained in place for years before eventually being lifted, but by then it had become part of the legend itself.

Rather than settling the question of whether the creature exists, these episodes demonstrate something else: the monster functions as a shared cultural symbol.
